Laura Vandewynckel

Laura Vandewynckel studeerde Taal- en Letterkunde aan de Universiteit Gent en Dramatische en Audiovisuele Kunsten aan het RITCS School of Arts in Brussel. Haar stopmotionfilm Paradise (2014), een speelse maar kritische reflectie op 'ethisch' toerisme, werd geselecteerd voor La Cinef in Cannes en het Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF). Dankzij de Sifnos Award van La Cinef realiseerde ze Pharmakos (2017), een documentaire over een collectieve heropvoering van het Griekse Pharmakos-ritueel, samen met de inwoners van het eiland Sifnos. Haar animatiekortfilm Le Crépuscule (2023), die de impact van onheilspellend nieuws op ons collectieve bewustzijn onderzoekt, reist langs internationale filmfestivals.

Naast haar filmwerk schrijft en regisseert Laura ook theaterproducties. Zo maakte ze onder meer A Modest Contribution (2018), over goede bedoelingen met onbedoelde gevolgen, en de participatieve voorstelling Stick Together (2021), geïnspireerd op stokspelen, dans en gevechten. Haar voorstelling Lost in LEO (2023) is een poppenvoorstelling die klimaatverandering en menselijke impact belicht vanuit het perspectief van ruimtepuin. Daarnaast doceert Laura aan het RITCS en werkt ze aan een doctoraat waarin ze onderzoekt hoe automaten kunnen worden ingezet als activistisch instrument.

Laura Vandewynckel studied Linguistics and Literature at Ghent University and Dramatic and Audiovisual Arts at RITCS School of Arts in Brussels. Her stop-motion film Paradise (2014), a playful yet critical reflection on 'ethical' tourism, was selected for La Cinef in Cannes and the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF). Thanks to the Sifnos Award from La Cinef, she made Pharmakos (2017), a documentary about a collective re-enactment of the Greek Pharmakos ritual, together with the inhabitants of the island of Sifnos. Her animated short film Le Crépuscule (2023), which examines the impact of ominous news on our collective consciousness, has travelled to international film festivals.

Alongside her film work, Laura also writes and directs theatre productions. These include A Modest Contribution (2018), about good intentions with unintended consequences, and the participatory performance Stick Together (2021), inspired by stick games, dance and combat. Her production Lost in LEO (2023) is a puppet performance that examines climate change and human impact from the perspective of space debris. Laura also teaches at RITCS and is working on a PhD investigating how automata can be used as an activist tool.
