Laurens Goyvaerts
Laurens Goyvaerts is Chief Scientific Officer bij ReVision Implant en promovendus aan de KU Leuven. ReVision ontwikkelt een hersenimplantaat dat tot doel heeft blinde mensen weer bruikbaar zicht te geven.
In tegenstelling tot technologieën die het netvlies of de oogzenuw proberen te stimuleren, is de aanpak van ReVision erop gericht het oog volledig te omzeilen en visuele informatie rechtstreeks naar de visuele cortex van de hersenen te sturen. Het doel is niet om het normale gezichtsvermogen te herstellen, maar om mensen bruikbare visuele informatie te geven die hun oriëntatie, mobiliteit en zelfstandigheid kan ondersteunen.
Tijdens deze afsluitende sessie op woensdag zal Laurens het technologische en menselijke verhaal achter dit werk delen. Samen met Jeroen Perk – die blind is – brengt FTI Leuven het perspectief van iemand voor wie dit soort technologie niet alleen innovatie is, maar ook een mogelijke verandering in zelfstandigheid, identiteit, verwachtingen en het dagelijks leven.
